DIY Disco Ghost: The Ultimate Halloween Decoration Guide

Halloween is all about getting creative with your decorations, and nothing says “spooky and fun” like a DIY Disco Ghost! This eye-catching decoration combines the eerie presence of a ghost with the glitzy sparkle of a disco ball, making it the perfect addition to your Halloween decor. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to create your own DIY Disco Ghost, complete with a list of supplies, detailed instructions, and helpful tips to ensure your ghost is the talk of the town.

Why Make a DIY Disco Ghost?

Creating your own Halloween decorations allows you to customize your decor and save money. The DIY Disco Ghost stands out for several reasons:

  1. Unique Appeal: Unlike traditional Halloween decorations, the Disco Ghost combines spookiness with a festive disco vibe.

  2. Customizable: You can tailor your Disco Ghost to match your Halloween theme and preferences.

  3. Fun Project: This DIY project is enjoyable and a great way to get into the Halloween spirit with friends or family.

  4. Budget-Friendly: Making your own decorations can be more cost-effective than buying pre-made ones.

Supplies Needed

Before you start, gather the following supplies:

  • Styrofoam ball (size depends on desired ghost head size)

  • Tomato cage

  • 3-4 layers of tulle (white or any desired color)

  • Glittery sequin fabric

  • LED lights (battery-operated or plug in is fine)

  • Black stick-on felt

  • Scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tomato Cage

The tomato cage will form the skeleton of your Disco Ghost, providing structure and height.

  1. Invert the Tomato Cage: Turn the tomato cage upside down so the legs are at the top.

  2. There is no need to secure the legs, we’ll be using them to attach our head.

Step 2: Attach the Styrofoam Ball

The Styrofoam ball will serve as the head of your ghost. I used a large 9.6” one.

Position the Ball: Place the Styrofoam ball on the top of the inverted tomato cage. Carefully press down the legs slide into the styrofoam. The ball will fit snugly, there is no need for glue or anything else to secure.

Step 3: Add the LED Lights

LED lights will make your Disco Ghost glow, adding to its spooky charm.

  1. Position the Lights: Wrap the LED lights around the tomato cage. If using plug in lights, start at the head working your way down so the plug ends up near the bottom where your outlet is most likely positioned.

  2. If using a battery back, you’ll want to conceal it. Tuck the buttery back inside the cage.

Step 4: Add the Tulle Layers

The tulle will give your ghost its ghostly, flowing appearance.

  1. Cut the Tulle: Cut the tulle into strips long enough to drape over the tomato cage and reach the bottom. If you go into a craft store they will do it for you!

  2. Drape the Tulle: Layer the tulle over the Styrofoam ball and tomato cage. Start with one strip and continue adding layers until the entire structure is covered.

Step 4: Add the Glittery Sequin Fabric

The glittery sequin fabric will give your ghost its disco sparkle.

I found the perfect size fabric where there is no need for cutting! Simply drape over your tulle layers and you are good to go!

Step 6: Create the Face

The black stick-on felt will be used to create the ghost’s eyes and mouth if preferred.

  1. Cut Out Shapes: Cut out two circles for the eyes and a larger oval or smile shape for the mouth from the black stick-on felt.

  2. Attach the Face: Stick the felt shapes onto the Styrofoam ball to create the ghost’s face. Adjust the placement until you achieve the desired look.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Experiment with Colors: While white tulle is traditional, you can experiment with different colors to match your Halloween theme.

  2. Use Battery-Operated Lights: Opt for battery-operated LED lights for ease of use and to avoid having to deal with power cords.

  3. Secure Your Decorations: If using outdoors, make sure all elements are securely attached to avoid them falling off over time.

  4. Create Multiple Ghosts: Make several ghosts in different sizes for a more dynamic display.

  5. Add Extra Decorations: Enhance your ghost with additional Halloween decorations like spider webs, bats, or glitter. A little pumpkin in the front would be a cute addition!
